The Square of the European Promise is being created as a work of the conceptual artist Jochen Gerz and at the same time as a public and European process. Gerz’ works in public space have radically changed the relationship between art and the viewer. His thesis: In a democratic society there is no space for mere spectators.
The processes, often lasting for several years, create new publics, because they require public authorship. The individual is not a mere consumer, but contributes to an expression which is out of his control. That is what makes him part of the growing work. Gerz’s art in public space becomes the aesthetic of a democracy searching for a new reason.
